Student of the Week - March 1, 2017
Congratulations to Bobby Ryan, who was named Student of the Week at Wednesday's all-school meeting. Bobby is a 12th grade Alpine athlete who comes to KMS from Hurley, NY. Bobby's recognition is particularly special, given the fact that he has already received this honor earlier this year. Generally speaking, students are not given this award twice in one year, but after discussion among the faculty, the decision was made to award Bobby for a second time.
He was nominated by Math Department Chair Steve Tuckerman. Steve commented, "I can't say enough about Bobby Ryan. Bobby is competing at an extremely high level, and his travel reflects this. Although Bobby has not been in school much since New Year's, he has not only kept up with his homework - in Calculus, no less - but he recently completed a difficult take home chapter test. His grade on the chapter test was 94%. Almost everybody would be happy with that grade. Not Bobby. As soon as I posted the grade he came to see me to see what he had done wrong. He did this despite not having classes scheduled with me yesterday."
English Department Chair Alex Crivici agreed: "I second a second nomination for Bobby. Bobby checks in almost every day while he is on the road, and he creates a timeline when he will submit all of his work. Bobby's precociousness and motivated demeanor make him a model student. Bobby is an example of a KMS student in that if you set goals for yourself, advocate for your wellbeing, and balance academics and athletics then you will be successful in all of your endeavors. Keep it up, Bobby!"
World Languages Department Chair Claudia Revenko-Bowen added her thoughts, "Bobby epitomizes what it means to be an independent learner. In both Spanish and Understanding Terrorism, he continually shows initiative, asking questions and seeking clarification when needed. He takes responsibility for his learning and is fully committed to doing his best, at school or far away on competitions and training. Bobby has shown that distance is only a matter of mindset and attitude. Great job!"
History Department Chair Courtney O'Keefe added, "As Bobby's Academic Advisor and Student of the Week coordinator, I have had the pleasure of talking off and on with Bobby's teachers about his academic progress this year. In my conversations, it is apparent that Bobby has and continues to go above and beyond what is expected of him academically, while balancing a massively difficult training and traveling schedule. This not only includes getting his assigned work completed and turned in on time (or, in some instances, early, but it also mastering the new expectations and responsibilities associated with our new blended learning model. He is what we wish students at KMS to be: engaged, focused, self-directed, and responsible. Bobby has already received this recognition this year (a first for a student to be recognized twice), but it was felt, by many of the teachers and myself, that Bobby needs to be recognized for his hard work. He deserves it and I can think of no better student to be recognized twice this year than Bobby."
Impressive and well-deserved accolades, Bobby! Nice work!
