Mazie Hayden races for Team USA at MTB Worlds
Killington Mountain School SkiCross and Downhill Mountain Biking athlete Mazie Hayden just returned from Australia after being named to Team USA and competing at UCI MTB World Championships. She was in Australia for two FIS ANC SkiCross races and was able to extend her stay, switch her ski gear for a bike, and race at Worlds.
The Cairns race course is in a rain forest and is famous for being a mud fest. This year, dry conditions prevailed and the course was loose and dusty. Coming from Vermont, Mazie had never raced loose, dusty conditions. After many crashes, she survived her time trial finishing in 11th.
On Sunday, the conditions were dry and dusty again with loose moondust-like dirt in many of the corners. Mazie put together a better run, crashing only once on a hard off camber right hand corner. She shaved 13 seconds off her qualifying run and finished in ninth. Team USA Junior Women finished second in the team ranking!
Mazie will finish up the downhill MTB season with an ESC race at Windham, NY this weekend and ESC Finals at Mt Snow on October 15th.
